There are numerous problems confronting the country - Sultan of Sokoto

Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, has identified injustice as the main problem confronting the country. The Sultan who is the president of Jama’at Nasril Islam(JNI) made the disclosure on Tuesday, January 17, in Ilorin, Kwara state, at the opening of a two day international conference on “ Security And Peaceful Co-existence In Nigeria , The Sun reports. The Sarkin Muslim noted that there were other numerous problems confronting the country. He also admitted that there is palpable tension among Christians and Muslims. He said:  “We have been having problems in Nigeria because of impunity. The small percentage of criminals in our midst should, however, not be used to label all of us.” The Sultan, however, said with proper understanding, Nigerian can overcome its problems. The Nigerian police has said that it is wrong for any police officer to request for citizens’ phone. The police said officers have no right to search mobile phones of citizens whenever on routine stop and search on Nigerian road. The Lagos state police spokesperson Dolapo Badmus in video said phones are private belonging and citizens deserve a right to their privacy. Badmus said:  “Your phone is private; it's your private property because people do a lot of private stuffs on their mobile phones so it's wrong." "Police officers have no right to do that except there is a reasonable ground to do so,"  Badmus said.

German politicians and civil servants are desperately trying to build and forge ties with Team Trump. It doesn't appear to be going terribly well. The US president-elect has condemned Angela Merkel's decision to let in 890,000 migrants as a "catastrophic mistake" and dismissed the European Union as "basically a vehicle for Germany". He has also threatened German car-maker BMW with a 35% tariff if it builds a plant in Mexico. His remarks have provoked dismay, but not surprise, in Berlin. And it's still not clear when Chancellor Merkel will meet the new president..

Mishi Mboko, the women's representative for the coastal city of Mombasa, says it was the best strategy to shore up opposition votes. "Women, this is the strategy you should adopt. It is the best. Deny them sex until they show you their voter's card," she said. The registrations ends on 17 February. Ms Mboko said sex was a powerful weapon and would encourage reluctant men to rush to register as voters in the exercise that began on Monday. She said her husband would not be affected by the boycott as he had already registered, the  Standard newspaper reports .

Brexit: UK to leave single market, says Theresa May

Theresa May has said the UK "cannot possibly" remain within the European single market, as staying in it would mean "not leaving the EU at all". But the prime minister promised to push for the "freest possible trade" with European countries and to sign new deals with others around the world. She also announced Parliament would get to vote on the final deal agreed between the UK and the EU. But Labour warned of "enormous dangers" in the prime minister's plans. Source: BBC

Oil prices rise above $58

The new year looks promising for Nigeria and other oil producing countries as oil prices hit 18-month high yesterday, the first trading day of 2017, buoyed by hopes that a deal between the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC, and non-OPEC members to cut production, which kicked in on Sunday, January 1, 2017, will drain a global supply glut. Benchmark Brent crude jumped more than 2.0 percent to a high of $58.37, up $1.55 a barrel and its highest since July 2015, while United States’ light crude oil hit rose to $55.24, up $1.52 a barrel, also its highest since July 2015
